“Shout out to everyone makin’ my beats, you helpin’ me preach.
This music’s the only thing keepin’ the peace when I’m fallin’ to pieces
Look at the sky tonight, all of the stars have a reason”
Lil peep
Thank You Peep
Gustav Elijah Åhr (November 1, 1996 – November 15, 2017), also known as Lil peep was a rapper, singer, and songwriter from Allentown, Pennsylvania. Lil peep specialized in emo rap similar to XXXTentacion. Peep was a star and had great influence on the people around him. Peep was one of many artists who started their careers on Soundcloud as independent artists. His career started snowballing after the release of one of his several mixtapes, Hellboy in 2016.
Lil peeps debut album released in 2017. The name of the album was Come Over When You’re Sober, Pt. 1. That was the only album he was able to release before his death in November 2017, 14 days after his 21st birthday. Even after his death Peep continued to grow releasing one of if not my favorite song, Star Shopping. A song talking about love and heartbreak as he usually did. Lil Peep also rapped about drug use often in his songs. But these topics were common in this generation of rap. After peeps death many started protesting the use and glorification of drugs as a coping mechanism.
Lil Peep continued to grow after his passing. A year after his passing Come Over When You’re Sober Pt. 2 was released which debuted at number 4 on billboard’s top 200 and was his first top 10 album. Till this day his music is still being released. I personally don’t like the idea of releasing music after an artist’s death unless the project was finished and ready to release prior to their death. It has been 3 years since Peep’s death and music has been released every year since. A documentary was also released on Netflix explaining Peep’s life and the people around him. Lil Peep was a very talented artist and it’s a shame to have lost him way too soon.
“Everything changes with time. You can’t predict where you’re gonna be next year; you have no idea, you know what I mean?”
“I’m sadder than most of you with the money and the freedom”
“I gave her everything. She took my heart and left me lonely. I’ve been broken, heart’s contentious. I won’t fix, I’d rather weep. I’m lost then I’m found, but it’s torture being in love.”
XXXTentacion
Thank You X
Jahseh Dwayne Ricardo Onfroy (January 23, 1998 – June 18, 2018) also known as XXXTentacion was a rapper from Plantation, Florida. XXXTentacion made a very different style of music and started his career in 2013 and later blew up with his track “Look At Me” in 2016. X started his career on Soundcloud which is a free music app where creators can freely post and monetize their music. X’s success was based on his ability to float in and out of different genres of music. Switching from heavy metal to indie music. to genres on opposite sides of the spectrum.
XXXTentacion being young made it easier for him to relate to people like him. In most of his songs he rapped about love, pain, loneliness, and identity. These themes are ones that teenage kids and easily relate to. While making serious songs that have deep rooted meanings and lyrics he also made songs that make you feel good. Songs that you just want to dance to and sing along to without much thought. I personally enjoy listening to XXXTentacion. The memories of screaming his songs in my car with my friends were some of the best memories from my high school career. And his sad songs helped me through break ups and heartbreak as they did for many others.
In spite of his musical talent there was a lot of controversy around his name. X had a very troubled past and people were beginning to dig up his past. X got charged with gun charges and was sent to prison where he soon after realized three albums which fans no doubt loved. His debut album 17 hit the billboard top 200 at number 2. X had developed a cult following. people listened to his music despite his past. people separated the art from the artist but still loved him. One thing that i admire about X is that he was trying to change. He didn’t want to be defined by his past. He wanted to help as many people as he could while he was alive. He was doing good things in this world. It’s always awful losing an artist with so much talent and potential.
“Follow your dreams, and know that even though you have lost, you have guardian angels watching over you, day in and day out”
Jarad Anthony Higgins also known as Juice WRLD was a rapper out of Chicago, Illinois. Out of the many rappers that come from Chicago Juice WRLD was one of the most influence. After his singles Lucid Dreams and all girls are the same which landed him in the spotlight, he dropped his debut album “Goodbye & Good Riddance”. This album was a sensation and charted 3 songs in the top 100 billboard charts. After his debut album he released a collaboration album called “WRLD on Drugs” with Future a well known artist. Then he dropped Death race for love in 2019 which peaked at number 1 on the top 200 billboards. His music reached millions and inspired millions.
In his music Juice WRLD often mentioned drug abuse and suicide. He also mentioned and rapped about struggles with love past and present. As a young man I could relate heavy to his lyrics about love and hurt. The struggles he would sing and rap about were some of the same struggles I was going through at the time. Listening to his music helped me feel less alone. In his song all girls are the same he says “Tell me, what’s the secret to love? I don’t get it.” and explains what it feels like by saying “feel like I be runnin a race i’m not winning.” As a young man that’s what it can feel like at times, like you’re running a race for love and you just never win ever.
On December 8th, 2019, Jarad Anthony Higgins was pronounced dead by overdose. I was in my bed waking up and I checked my phone and that’s the first thing I saw. I was devastated and didn’t believe it was real. Another one of my favorite artists with so much potential was gone. In 2018 he released a song called “Legends” in remembrance of XXXTentacion and Lil Peep. It’s sad to listen to the song now because Juice himself was a legend in the making that we lost too soon.
Lord is important, but I am stronger I’m a monster with the heart of a lion divide and conquer walk on water, it won’t be long till I flyin’ that’s my departure
Mac Miller
Thank You Mac
Mac Miller, born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on January 19, 1992 was a very influential rapper who passed away too soon. Mac Miller spoke to the youth in his songs relating to them and letting them know they’re not alone. He had untapped potential to evolve the culture of Hip/ Hop and also evolve his own music. Mac Miller didn’t make music to keep up with the time or give people what they want. He gave people what they needed.
In his music Mac talked about a lot of his struggles in life. Mac spoke on the concepts of Love, Drugs, and Life/ Death. In 2012 Mac was deeply affected by his close friend’s death Reuben Eli Mitrani. After his friend’s death he wrote a song called “REMember,” the first three letters being the initials of his friend. In this song he spoke about his friend and the idea of youth, loss, and legacy. One of the most heartfelt lyrics in the song talked about just that.
There’s just a bunch of shit I wish I could tell you
This life moves fast, I never knew that yours wouldn’t have lasted
